repress 2018, finally, i was able to be re-united with my father, rick (poppa) howard, in the studio again. he had two thoughts about the selections on this particular vinyl piece: >can your love find its way< is the track that laid out, and also, that he believed us to be blessed both in being reunited, and in what we were there to do. as my father continually offers me a knowledge that takes me time (sometimes years) to understand, i am very proud to offer this release to the world.

!!! 2018 repress !!! of nu guinea’s outstanding ‘world’ ep – the neapolitan duo is set to release new material on tartelet later in the year as part of the labels 10 th anniversary. the beautifully dislocated bougainvilles live lays out some warm analogue textures across a live percussion base, while the vocal edit of title track nu world ploughs a similar furrow to obscure 80’s afro-disco, with rich musical synth work over a pacey afro groove and undeniable jazz-funk flair. the flute mix passes over the vocal refrain from mix one and just gets down and wigs-out on those solos - an absolute killer! exotica dance club sounds like herbie visited the salsoul studios with his banks of analogue gear and jammed out into the small hours, as we head home on the beatless outro, all synth washes and lavish ear candy.

shane cooper is a bassist, composer and producer from cape town, south africa. he is part of the new wave of young voices in the south african jazz scene. a prolific sideman and award-winning acoustic jazz artist, he also involved in south africa’s leftfield electronic dance scene under the alias card on spokes. features shabaka hutchings ( a.r.e project., sons of kemet and shabaka and the ancestors) amongst other fine players. big tip!

from uvb-76 music’s fractal personnel rises karim maas. a familiar face behind a new mask, maas, one of the sonic panjandrums at the core of the labels sound submits an aural experience that bleeds between genre and tone with striking ease, negotiating a through line that is hard to pin down in any moment before it shifts again. a stunning ep that remains true to uvb-76 music’s core tenants. four absolute steamers and a huren remix for good measure.

that summer i developed somewhat of an obsession with tonto’s expanding head band after having seen them perform at the big chill festival that year. the music blew my mind. later upon my return to civilisation and the ensuing research which then began in earnest i became as much blown away by the enormous t.o.n.t.o. (the original new timbral orchestra) modular synthesizer that had created the music as i was by the music itself. built in the early 70s, it s still the largest synthesizer around today. with the live show still resonating in my head i tracked down everything tonto had ever recorded. one of these tracks was an obscure outtake from the time t.o.n.t.o.’s creators, malcolm cecil and robert margouleff, were producing and engineering for stevie wonder in the ‘70s(https://youtu.be/wuaszff7yq0). the track, bittersweet, only ever appeared on a highly limited self-released cd put together to coincide with their appearance at the big chill. consequently i featured it on a few mixes i did over the years and invariably i’d be asked “what’s that track?” by those with an ear for something unique. and invariably these same people, many of them djs, would turn away disgruntled when i informed them it was cd only. although i didn t know it at the time, the seed was definitely sown for this vinyl compilation that you now hold in your hands.

22 digit ltd is the vinyl only off shot of uk based 22 digit records, and this new release is upfront house music in the style of artists like mr. g. this 22 digit ltd release is a collaboration between uk stalwart moodymanc and label boss william welt with solo remixes from appleblim and alland byallo. moodymanc also known to many as dubble d, is a manchester based artist who boasts seminal releases on labels including tsuba, local talk and 20/20 vision among many others of a similar calibre. william welt is a young artist who now based in manchester, cut his teeth in newcastle upon tyne, and has releases on labels including traum and construct. the first of the remixes comes from appleblim, whose bass heavy sound has been a regular feature of imprints inclouding r&s records, aus music, tempa and skull disco. second of the remixes comes from alland byallo, who has previously released on labels including third ear, get physical, poker flat, moodmusic, dirt crew and rawax.

up next from the rhythm büro label is an ep from cyspe, who might be better known as robin koek or for being one half of the almighty dutch techno duo artefakt. rb003 marks a special occasion for the label in releasing a full ep from a single artist. “after this world” seems to proceed forward fittingly on the same path once paved by cyspe’s debut record “amnesia”, released on koek’s own label, insula, in 2014.
